Drama in Education and Community: What is it?

If I had a dollar for every time someone looked at me like I had two heads when they ask me what program I'm in and I say "Drama in Education and Community", I'd be rich.

DrEd is so much more than a program at the University of Windsor. DrEd is a method, a pedagogy, a way of life. Our DrEd education teaches us to use drama for practical reasons such as community work and classroom work. DrEd inspires us to think creatively, to challenge the world around us, to embrace the little things, to think critically and to never stop exploring. DrEd teaches us the importance of empathy and passion.

In our DrEd education, we are challenged to work hard to bring a lively sense of energy to every classroom and community we step into. In the classroom, we are taught the ability to innovate games, activities and standard methods of teaching in a classroom setting in order to ignite the creative sparks and passions of our students.

In the Community, we aim to see bring a sense of true community through practicing empathetic method and compassion in workshops, programs and other Community events. When it comes to planning anything (work shop or lesson), we take pride in bringing a fresh twist to things by including beauty, ease and a feeling of the whole.

Each DrEd-ucator discovers their own teacher self. Through the guidance of our fearless leaders (profs), we are able to discover our own teaching styles. Through the teachings of Augusto Boal, Paulo Freire, David Booth, William Ayers, and many many more, we explore the world of Drama, and use the tools we find to educate in both classroom and Community. There is not one way to describe what Drama in Education and Community is. It is access to a multitude of tools and information that can be accessed to change lives and inspire.
