I know we often see chart pads in kindergarten classes and maybe in some of the primary years in grade school, but the use of these giant pieces of paper can be incredibly useful for any student! Breaking students into groups and asking them to brain storm around a word, or asking students to contribute to a writing piece, these chart pads can be a great way to get ideas out and flowing. Personally, being a visual learner and really needing things to be visibly outlined for me, the way we use chart pads has drastically changed my way of learning. I’ve used them to plan videos, projects and many essays. It’s a great way to take what’s in your head and organize and collect those thoughts onto paper. It's a good way to plan anything and organize ideas!
It doesn’t always have to be on a floor or wall either- putting a large length of Kraft paper on a table and letting a ground of kids explore different mediums with paint has also worked well for me in the past. We drove our toys trucks through the pain and explored the patterns their wheels made when we drove them along the chart paper! One teacher even used the chart paper to create “personal space” maps for her students who were sharing a table in the classroom! Opportunities are endless. I’ve included some pictures and some of the activities we’ve used chart pads in!
